Chris Mccandless s Into The Wild - 1570 Words

Chris McCandless and Holden Caulfield are two boys who both disagree with their current societies and decide to escape to discover their identities. In Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless never seems to regret his decision to leave, while Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye begins appreciating his life more and shortly returns home to his family. After leaving the comfort and security of their homes, Chris McCandless feels finally liberated from society, whereas Holden Caulfield realizes that he is too young and immature to survive on his own. Through their journeys to escape their unhealable wounds, both boys realize that life is meant to be lived with others. Chris McCandless despises the society he lives in. He loathes the fact that monetary items and tangible possessions are valued over things like love and joy. Chris shows a tone of disgust after his parents offer to buy him a new car for a graduation gift, â€Å"I can’t believe they’d try a nd buy me a car† (Krakauer 21). After spending years reading the works of Leo Tolstoy, Chris McCandless believes that life is best experienced when alone and in nature. Chris supports this transcendentalist ideology so much that he decides to try it for himself. Chris McCandless spends two years traversing the American southwest. He abandons his identity by changing his name to Alex Supertramp, by abandoning his car, and by donating all of his money to OXFAM. Essay on Inherit the wind (Scopes trial) - 1041 Words

The play Inherit the Wind, was written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee to inform its readers about the injustice of a law that limited the freedom of an ordinary citizen. This play is based upon actual events that happened to an individual, John Scopes, in Dayton, Tennessee during the 1920’s. This famous â€Å"Monkey Trial† not only allowed people to begin to accept new theories about the origin of man, but also showed that they did not have to limit themselves in other areas of life. In the beginning of the play, the authors try to lead us into the topic of Darwinism versus Creationism. One instance was when the character Howard actually told Melinda â€Å"Your old man’s a monkey!†(5) The audience also learns that the accused lawbreaker, Bert†¦show more content†¦They used it as a tool to decrease the stress of the characters and the trial itself. For instance when Brady sarcastically says to Drummond â€Å"is the defense showing us the latest fashion in the city of Chicago?†(40), and Drummond strikes back with slapping his suspenders down to attract the attention of the court. They want laughter aroused in the courtroom. Hornbeck himself is in the play to create some cynical humor. Though it is not exactly a technique, it did capture my attention how the character who did accustom with changes and was open to all new ideas ended better than he who was â€Å"faithful† yet stubborn with old ideas. What I didn’t like about Inherit the Wind does not show to be a historically accurate depiction of the Scopes trial. The main source for Lee and Lawrence’s information was the actual trial record found in Dayton, Tennessee, dating back to 1925. They did not use all of the characters or dialogue from the records, instead they elaborated on the actual people and events, also using reporters’ stories on the case. The authors placed intriguing characters within the play to make the story’s events unfold more readily and become more interesting. The book shows the reader how closed minded that these characters can be when it comes to a new, different idea. The authors used primary sources, they depended on the original court recorded documents. Essay The Environment and its problems The environment is the place that surrounds us. It is a gift of nature and it is the natural world of water, land, air and change. The environment is what we call home. They all affect the world and harm the eco-system. Some of the environmental problems in the world are acid rain, air pollution, energy, global warming, hazardous waste, pollution, and smog. Some of these problems are man-made and some of these problems are natural disasters. Environmental pollution is the biggest problem on Earth today. It is true our trees are getting cut down rapidly and the earth is getting warmer but if pollution continues our earth will fell like a boiling desert or covered with seawater. There are three types of pollution which are air pollution, sound pollution and water pollution. Air pollution is when smog is in the air and it’s hard for us to breathe. Sound pollution is when there’s such a big noise by a vehicle that sometimes people lose their hearing. That is why we should walk or ride a bike anywhere close to where you are and a mile distance. Water pollution is when the water gets polluted with waste and chemicals There are also many politicians who have done something to help the environment. For example, Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States of America and was a politician and conservationist. He is known for setting aside land for national forests, establishing wildlife refuges, developing the farmlands of the American West, and advocating protection of natural resources. Theodore Roosevelt is a strong role model for environmentalists of the future. He used his political skills to influence people and to help the cause of conservation, consistently focusing on the state the environment and on its effect on future generations. Creating a future in which the environment is clean is a challenging task. Managing the environment involves support from governments, organizations and your community. It may appear that environmental problems are too hard to take care of but the decisions we make, the actions we take and the words we speak influence the decisions that we make about the environment. There are many ways in which you can adapt your daily life to think more about the future of the environments and wildlife. Saving energy, conserving resources, and recycling are just a few ways you could make a difference. The most important thing to think about is the choices you make related to the environment. One of the things your school can do is become an eco-school! Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental educational program for grades K-12 that helps school communities help kids become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the ecological footprint of schools. Ontario EcoSchools’ resources offer an environmental perspective to the choices we make in operating our schools and in planning classroom programs based on the Ontario curriculum. Reduce your driving (walk, bike, ride, take public transport, or carpool). Choose a more fuel efficient car. 2. Don’t leave your TV, computers, and DVD/VCD players on standby; it uses more electricity than the little red LED light! 3. Choose more energy-efficient appliances, especially major ones like refrigerators, air conditioners and water heaters. 4. Recycle everything you can; newspapers, cans, glass bottles and jars, motor oil, scrap metal, etc. 5. Don’t use electrical appliances for things you can easily do by hand, such as opening cans. 6. Plug off your cell phone charger when charging is completed. 7. Re-use bread bags and the bags you bring your produce home in. . Store food in re-usable containers, instead of plastic wrap or aluminum foil. 9. Take unwanted, re-usable items to a charitable organization or thrift shop. 10. Don’t leave water running needlessly. Save some of your washing machine water. Gargle your mouth with a cup of water instead. 11. Set your air conditioner temperature to 24-26C instead of below 23C. 12. Turn off the lights, TV, or other electrical appliances when you are out. 13. Fill a 1. 5/2L drink plastic bottle and leave it inside the Water Closet; this will save you that same amount every time you flush the toilet. 4. Do not use the water heater on a hot afternoon! Use cold water in the washer whenever possible. 15. Print or copy on both sides of the paper. (Plus use the other side of this paper. ) The environment, the Earth, is our home. It is where we live, breathe, and eat. It is very important so I think we should take really good care of it and protect it!
